Positive, Negative, or Twisted Mind?

5752085020_02e29aa777_nRomans 7:19-20 “For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”

On any given day, a multitude of thoughts run through our mind. These thoughts might fluctuate between positive, negative, or twisted! Sometimes we agree with those thoughts, other times we reject them, but either way, there’s a dialogue going on. Any bantering back and forth counts as self-talk. Why is it so important to monitor the quality of our thoughts? Because quantum physics states that our energy flows where our attention goes. In other words, since everything in the universe has an energetic vibration, energy can be created and molded by our thoughts.

Thoughts are at the origin of our self-perception and underlie numerous human behaviors and interactions. Together, they function like a pilot at the control panels of our life. Does that pilot have a positive, negative, or twisted mind? Recurring thoughts create a strong impact in our mind, and it’s our mind that ultimately influences our actions. In today’s world, it’s easy to observe the outcomes of a twisted mind through various senseless crimes and radical ideology. Although not always as noticeable, a negative mind also comes with a set of consequences. Negative thought patterns can damage our self-esteem, interfere with work productivity, trigger depression, disrupt relationships, and prevent us from realizing our full potential.

As a personal trainer, I must contend with people’s negativity on a regular basis. Let me explain. For example, whenever I demonstrate an exercise to a new client; often, even before he or she attempts to do it, the initial reaction is negative: “I can’t do that.” Now, let’s fast forward after that client has been training for several months; he or she is doing the same exercise with perfect form while cracking a joke. What changed? During the transformation process, not only were physical changes being made to challenge and strengthen the person’s body, but mental hurdles had to be overcome as well. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize their mental well-being is jeopardized because of their negative mindset. They join a gym, but still miss the mark on what it means to be healthy. However, when they change their negative self-perception by developing a healthy self-image, they start implementing an important PHS principle that immediately goes to work on improving their mental well-being.

Remember, all dimensions of our health and well-being are connected—the mind, body and spirit. In order to reach your fitness goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you can’t allow negativity to get in your way. You weren’t born pessimistic, but maybe it’s time to think about the way you think.
